Hidden Voices
Works by Women Composers Through the Ages
We often think that the twentieth century, which saw the introduction of the women’s rights movement, also saw the introduction of women artists, including composers. This program shatters this misconception by demonstrating that women composers have always been active, but they have been largely ignored by their own contemporaries and by succeeding generations. Here is a selection of works by vastly underrated composers from the Baroque period through the 21st century.

Johannes Brahms – Four Piano pieces, Op 119
This program is a musical representation of the arc of life, using pieces written at the beginning, middle and end of the lives of various composers. When we think of a young prodigy, Mozart could not fit the description more, as evidenced by these miraculous compositions he wrote between the ages of 5 and 15. They are infrequently performed, but show an astonishing charm and grace. Schumann composed his “Abegg” Variations at the age of 20, as a musical representation of young love. Debussy wrote Children’s Corner for his 3-year-old daughter at a point in his life when he could look back on childhood through the eyes of an adult. With Chopin’s Fourth Ballade we hear a composer at his mature peak, though his life would be cut tragically short by tuberculosis. Janacek composed In the Mist at the age of 58, just before he achieved the international success that had thus far eluded him all his life. I felt it was important to include a piece by a living composer and this beautiful work is a fitting tribute to Del Tredici’s 70th Birthday. Finally, we have Brahms’ Op. 119, written near the end of the composer’s life and his last work for piano solo, which he mysteriously called “the lullabies of my pain.”

Johannes Brahms: Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op 24
This program explores works that deliberately recall the past and draw inspiration from earlier masterpieces. The Busoni transcription is a rich and romantic retake on Bach's D minor Chaconne for solo violin. The Variations on a theme by Chopin is one of the masterpieces of Mompou and is based on the famous A major prelude Op. 2, No. 7. Del Tredici draws inspiration from Eric Satie's famous Gymnopedies which are in turn based on a ceremonial dance performed at ancient Greek festivals. Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op 24 were composed as a birthday present for Clara Schumann. Its theme is transformed into a monumental 25 variations and Fugue from an aria in George Frederic Handel's Harpsichord Suite in B flat. While the Theme and Variations is a very traditional form with roots going back to the Renaissance, Brahms' set explores a very contemporary harmonic and emotional language.

Italy has always been a cultural crossroads. Its native sons have gone abroad to affect musical development in other countries, and composers from around the world have drawn inspiration from its rich history and traditions. Domenico Scarlatti, one of the great keyboard virtuosi of his day, lived and worked at the Spanish court, and composed over 600 sonatas for the harpsichord. David del Tredici, an American composer of Italian descent, writes three pieces in an ancient Greek form that classical Romans would have appreciated. Muzio Clementi, a contemporary of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, lived in London and was considered one of the premier fortepianists of the early 19th century. Luigi Dallapiccola, the first Italian composer to adopt the serial techniques of his contemporaries Schoenberg and Webern, composed his Sonatina Cononica as 4 short pieces based on a Paganini Caprice. Franz Liszt, perhaps the greatest keyboard virtuoso of all time, wrote many works inspired by his tours of Italy as a young man. He also composed transcriptions that helped popularize great melodies from current operatic hits.
